Project management training


  As organisations grow they tend to take on larger projects. However, larger projects bring larger risks and before expansion leads to pain and overheating the principles of project management need to be firmly institutionalised in the organisation.
 
Format of the training
A series of ½ day workshops followed by a review. Supported throughout by on-call telephone experts

Day 1:    (4 hours) Goal:
Cover the correct way to start up a project, what initiation entails and describe the planning process.
Outputs:
These will include an understanding of the reasons for possible failure, namely: Lack of coordination of resources & activities, Lack of communication resulting in wrong product, Poor estimation of duration & costs Insufficient measurables, Inadequate planning of resources, activities & scheduling, Lack of progress control, Lack of quality control, Poor definition & agreement of business case
Homework:
Draw up a plan for the introduction of the some project using MS-Project.

Day 2:    (4 hours)
Goal
Complete the Planning exercise, review the plan, and introduce the principles of stage control and product delivery.
Outputs:
Reviewed project plan and coverage of issues arising, Principles of estimating and scheduling, Management of Issues, Analysis of risks.
Homework:
Set up and populate an issue register, Outline the risks and their mitigating actions

Day 3:     (4 hours)
Goal
Review the issue and risk registers, continue the principles of stage control and introduce stage boundary management
Outputs:
Reviewed issues register and coverage of issues arising, Reviewed risk register, Progress control and reporting , Exception and Change Management, Re-focus on business benefit
Homework:Complete project templates which will be provided.

Day 4:    (4 hours)
Goal
Review the completed project templates, introduce the principles of project closing and directing a project.
Outputs:
Reviewed templates, Linking a project with corporate goals, How to keep all corporate interests involved and commit required resources, Authorisations, Exception management
Homework:
Actions on action list

Follow on:     (4 hours)
Goal
Review the assignment and produce post project review. To be performed in the week subsequent to the completion of the assignment.
Outputs: ¨
Achievement of expected benefits, Unexpected benefits, Unexpected problems, User reaction

On-call support:    (4 hours)
Goal
Provide telephone support for queries pertaining to the use of the material and the nature of the homework.
Note:
This is included in the cost of the assignment to ensure there is no hesitation in calling upon it. If the time requested exceeds the time allocated then prior agreement will obtained before it is extended.
